Schoonheid in foto’s is een illusie

Vandaag heb ik een bezoek gebracht aan het International Center for Photography. Een toonaangevend museum met een indrukwekkend archief van 60.000 foto’s. Terwijl ik me vergaapte aan foto’s van onder andere Henry Cartier-Bresson, schoot me opeens een quote binnen uit de film Closer. Natalie Portman, in de rol van de rebelse jongedame Alice, bezoekt een fotoexpositie met als thema ‘Strangers’. Als iemand haar vraagt wat ze van de foto’s denkt, antwoordt ze als volgt:
It’s a lie. It’s a bunch of sad strangers photographed beautifully, and… all the glittering assholes who appreciate art say it’s beautiful ’cause that’s what they wanna see. But the people in the photos are sad, and alone… But the pictures make the world seem beautiful, so… the exhibition is reassuring which makes it a lie, and everyone loves a big fat lie.
Neemt u met die gedachte de Worldpressphoto 2006 nog eens door.
